Natural hazards in the Himalayas to write a thesis. The highly developed terraced agriculture on the steep slopes of the Nepalese mountains fascinated me from the start. But isn’t it severely threatened by the heavy monsoon rains, earthquakes and landslides? I could so often see demolition niches from landslides, debris cones and traces of flooding in the middle of inhabited areas. We wanted to pursue this question and find out more about the natural hazards, especially about the landslides in the densely populated mountain area.
A heavy summer monsoon in 1998 with numerous fresh landslides finally prompted me to tackle this demanding task with my physiogeographical background and some experience from the European high mountains.
